Honestly, most sophomores and, dare I say, upperclassmen probably don’t either).                   It’s upsetting to walk past rooms that belonged to beloved members of my living group who have now graduated.01 I miss you Annie:((( This and the influx of new faces have shifted the culture of my living space, and I find myself not willing or interested to partake in social activities. Though to be fair, you get what you put in, so my detachment is on me.         There’s an innocent energy to freshmen that’s inspiring and a little nostalgic. I didn’t come to MIT with my eyes wide open, ready to bear my heart to this institution. Indeed, I fully expected to be crushed at every corner my soul tried to run into. All this to mean that I’m not surprised that there are struggles and challenges, just a little shocked at how much it actually hurts.   I am still bruised from my freshman year. Some rooms and hallways and people have memories plastered all over them that sometimes dim my day. But I am learning to bow my head, breathe, and move on. A personal interview with Edmonds 2018, an HIV positive sailor, explained that when I was diagnosed with HIV after high school, my family treated me as a pariah. We used to be very open with each other, but it took me getting worse for them to treat me like their son again (Edmonds.) Meanings This topic is incredibly important to many people Ive interacted with over the years. Ive met many people who lost loved ones to during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. When the AIDS crisis developed, those in power such as Ronald Regan and George H.W. Bush didnt do enough for the research of the disease. As I was researching this topic two separate pictures, one of David Wonjnarowicz and the other of Duane Kearns Puryear, kept popping up in my newsfeeds. The first photo was a picture of Wonjnarowiczs back with the words, If I die of AIDS- forget burial- just drop my body on the steps of the F.D.A. painted on the back of a leather jacket with a pink triangle, a usual sign to signal someone who is gay. The second photo depicted a young man possibly in his early to late 20s with dark curly hair wearing a white SWA sweatshirt. He is holding a sign with the writing saying, My name is Duane Kearns Puryear. I was born on December 20, 1964. I was diagnosed with AIDS on September 7, 1987 at 4:4 5 pm. I was 22 years old. Sometimes, it makes me very sad. I made this panel myself. If you are reading it, I am dead   These two photos have worried me, surely the government would have done something to help those who are affected? It turns out that the government didnt bother trying to help those people. Due to the governments ignorance, the world lost an entire generation of LGBT people who could have made a difference in this world. Now a days, teenagers dont know a lot about HIV/AIDS. According to Farid-ul-Hasnain 2009, access and exposure to appropriate HIV/AIDS information and discussing it with others has the potential positively to impact knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and sexual practices. Still, youth populations are poorly informed in Pakistan due to limited access to information about sexual and reproductive health matters, as both parents and the school system are reluctant to fulfil this obligation due to the sensitivity of the subject (Farid-ul-Hasnain. 5.) Even now, there is a lot of information out there on the internet. Many people dont know how to access it, discuss it, and have a mature conversation about it. I never had a discussion with someone about things like STIs and sex when I was younger; the conversation was always deemed too inappropriate for someone my age.   Everything that Ive learned about HIV/AIDS, I have learned on my own. Ive learned from talking to people and doing research. My interest into Freddie Mercurys life and watching many documentaries about him over the years, lead me to possibly wanting to work with who are affected by this virus. Those people who are affected by HIV/AIDS find them to be a death sentence. Those people believe that they are unworthy of love, or that there not worth people sticking around for. It is our job as future counselors to be there for people who have received this life sentence. We are there to inform and talk to them to let them know they are not alone in their struggles. Approximately 1,000,000 people in the United States are affected by HIV/AIDS; that is an approximate 1,000,000 people who needs someone there for them. Symptoms can begin as if a flu that lasts from a few days to several weeks. HIV can only be spread by unprotected oral, virginal and anal sex, sharing needles or through childbirth. TSNaimi, MD et al. reports that alcohol is responsible for 11.7% of all American Indian and Alaska Native deaths, compared to 3.3% for the U.S. general population (939). This disturbing discrepancy reinforces theage oldnotion of the "drunk Indian." Generalizations aside, is there some truth to this stereotype? Are Indians more likely than other races to be drunks? Of all the races, "Native Americans have the highest prevalencewith a percentage of12.1% of heavy drinkingA larger percentage of Native Americanswith29.6% also are binge drinkers" (Chartierand Caetano 153). Although some research has been done on genetic causes, little is actually known about why American Indians have the most difficulty in limiting their alcohol consumption. However, the consequences of drinking encompass almost every aspect of their lives: health, social, and legal. Once that first drink is t aken, alcohol becomes a best friend for many American Indians. A preventive plan needs to be incorporated to bring awareness to Native American children about the effects of alcohol so that they will never take that first drink. With a cultural and spiritual approach, leaning toward traditional tribal beliefs, education will empower Native Americans to break the chain of generational drinking patterns. There are many problems caused by alcoholism, but what causes alcoholism? Sandra Alters of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Illicit Drugs believes, "The development of alcoholism is the result of a complex mix of biological, psychological, and social factors" (18). The list of health related issues are extensive and include: liver disease, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, stroke, heart disease, hypertension, mouth and throat cancer, and fetal alcohol syndrome. In "Problematic drinking risk and the American Indian," Dr.NicheaSpillane argues that "Alcohol use among American Indians is perhaps the largest health concern in many American Indian communities" (8). Even with free medical clinics, known as Indian Health Services, many Native Americans who live in cities or have left their tribal lands find it difficult to receive the medical care that is needed. This could explain why, "Uninsured American Indians or Alaska Native Adults were more likely than uninsured adults in the general populatio n to have binged on alcohol in the past month" (SAMHSA 6). Various studies have shown the disturbing effects of alcohol on the American Indians' health. It is documented that "excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of preventable death and years of lost life in this population. During 2001-2005,AmericanIndian/AlaskaNativeswere more than twice as likely to die from alcohol-related causes,in comparison tothe U.S. general population (Naimiet al. 940). One of the many contributing factors, that may either be a result or a cause, of excessive drinking amongst Native Americans is lack of employment. Dr. Spillane confirms, "For many reservation-dwelling American Indians, access to standard life reinforces isnot available in any practical sense (work opportunities and economic security tend not to be attainable)" (8). When jobs are hard to come by, alcohol can fill the void left by unemployment and the feeling of discouragement that comes from not bringing in a paycheckto support their family. Some Native Americans may also have trouble maintaining jobs due to binge drinking or thehangovers experienced after a night of heavy drinking. For this reason, "compared with the national average, American Indian or Alaska Native adults were more likely to be living in poverty (27.6%vs. 11.5%) (SAMHSA 2). In addition to unemployment and poverty, legal issues are a major concern for many alcoholic American Indians. Foxconn Controversies Foxconn in the recent past has been involved in manufacturing in large quantities products for Apple viz., the iPod, iPad and the iPhone. Being one of the most renowned companies in the world, Foxconn has been involved in controversies mainly on how to manage employees (Jones, 2010). These initiated with the set-up of the Apple factory in Shenzhen, China. Apple was all over the news around the first week of Feb 10 not only for its sensational launch of the iPad, but also because of the high number of worker suicide in its Foxconn factory. Amidst all this, 12 Foxconn workers have already ended their lives this year, by jumping of the multi-story dormitories they live in or from the building during the very short duration of rest which they were given (Eyck, 2010). This crisis has urged the company to install safety nets in between the buildings as 20 more were stopped from killing themselves by the company authorities. At Longhua, there was a highly charged. This is because approximately 350,000 workers eat and otherwise live there, and during their protests, they had started chanting an insulting chant at Foxconn. The president of Foxconn, after heavy negotiations, said that the company would plan to move a significant portion of its workforce to a Western part of China, where they will be closer to their families. The case had become so out of control that the people who lived on the company premises had started calling the factory a Death Express. Management also had taken some steps toward controlling this phenomen on, such as creating a suicide hotline, and bringing monks to counter forces of evil. The Foxconn Empire employs about a million people, in the city of Shenzhen, across the city of Hong Kong. The premises of the industry contain 15 manufacturing buildings and they have dedicated one building to each customer. It was in these buildings where the suicides took place. The company made public a statement where it said that they have avoided a further 20 suicides. Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple upon hearing about the tragedy said that he found this incident very troubling and also mentioned that Apple always strives to provide the best jobs in a company with regard to understanding the working condition under the companys supply chain. There has been an alarming increase in the number of suicides, whose reasons are still not apparent. The culture of the workforce at Foxconn has been described as being run similar to a military. (Moore, 2010). Foxconns Unethical Management Working conditions The main reason for Foxconn being under the spotlight was because of its unethical management and working conditions which has been considered as the root cause of the deaths and suicides in the past one year. A report recently explains the toiling and the exhaustion caused by 12-hour shifts, workers prohibited from talking or interacting with co-workers and the pressure of just-in-time production in order to meet the high demand (Eyck, 2010). SACOM held a protest on the 8th of June which was the same day Apple launched its iPhone4. The demand of the protests initiated by the activists was to boycott all the Foxconn products (Eyck, 2010). Furthermore, a Chinese undercover team, filtered through the Longhua plant and gave the reporters they entire scenario of the industry. They reported by stating that the facilities were adequate but highly criticized their management. Hundreds of people work in the workshops and did not have the permission to even talk to their colleagues.. If so found, they would get a black mark on their record, be shouted at by their manager or even be fined. The report was followed adding Foxconns laying off of more than ten thousand workers due to the financial downturn and had been pressured to meet up with the demand for the Apple iPad due to its monumental success (Moore, 2010). The iPad appears to have placed immense strain on Foxconn workers which resulted in them in quitting jobs at the rate of 15,000 a month (Robins, 2010). In mid-eighteenth century England, Parliament passed the Gin Act of 1751, which restricted the sale of gin through increased retail license requirements and higher taxes on such liquor. This measure was enacted to reduce the consumption of spirits and the subsequent crime it engendered. Indeed, gin production increased nearly 500% from 1701 to 1751. However, the general populace became engaged in a fierce debate for and against the new legislation. While authors, artists, and religious leaders argued for the act, economists, businessmen, and landowners argued against it with equal fervor. Meanwhile, politicians were torn amongst themselves over the situation at hand. Each group held the position it did for either intrinsic or extrinsic reasons, usually but not always to serve their own best interests. Authors, artists, religious leaders, and certain politicians all supported the Gin Act of 1751, but each for individual motives. For example, one anonymous author described gin drinkers as â€Å"poor ragged people, cursing and quarreling with one another†, in clear correlation with his book’s title, Distilled Liquors: The Bane of the Nations (1736). His passion against gin was predictably conceived from painful firsthand experience in the London city streets. This sentiment is echoed in a different author’s similar observation. From a 1747 excerpt of The London Tradesman, he laments that society is caught in a vicious cycle of drunkenness, impossible to break. Both authors derive concern from a genuine desire to improve the human condition. However, the same cannot be said for artist William Hogarth in his opposing pictures, Gin Lane (1751) and Beer Street (1750). Because he was commissioned to create this anti-gin propaganda, his motives were purely business-ori ented. However, Defoe’s opinion may have differed had he not been a wealthy man untouched by the horrors of city slums. Because of his detachment from common society, Defoe was only able to see the cold, scientific ramifications of decreased gin production. Such was also the case with William Pulteney, a rich landowner who petitioned Parliament for lesser restrictions on gin sale, because gin was a thriving business to which many owed their source of income. Still others protested the gin act for completely different reasons. In one businessman’s letter to an important gin distiller (1736), he voiced legitimate concern that high gin license fees would violate property rights and hurt the economy. This very issue was also raised by a member of Parliament (1736), who cited vast possible financial losses to the crown as a result of extortionate taxes. Lord Bathurst of Parliament rejected the gin act for yet another reason. He believed drinking in moderation was a necessary evil for the maintenance of sanity. However, he was oblivious to the fact that alcohol consumption of most English drunkards was anything but moderate. Altogether, the Gin Act of 1751 was a highly controversial piece of legislation among the English demographic. While authors, artists, religious leaders, and some politicians defended its morality, economists, businessmen, landowners, and other politicians attacked its potential threat to political and economic stability.
